Back Country Horsemen of Washington's Mission Statement is:
1. To perpetuate the common sense use and enjoyment of horses in the back country.
2. To work to ensure that public lands remain open to recreational use.
3. To assist the various government and private agencies in their maintenance and management of said resource.
4. To educate, encourage, and solicit active participation in the wise use of the backcountry by the general public commensurate with our heritage.
Back Country Horsemen of Washington members are stewards of the land who work hard with other organizations and land managers to keep public lands open to the public. BCHW does this by working with the government, land managers, and other organizations to plan and work hard to maintain and improve the properties. BCHW also educates our members and the public to safely manage and use the public lands so they will be here for future generations to enjoy.
Oakland Bay Chapter is located in Shelton, Washington. We lease and manage roughly 1400 acres from Green Diamond in the Kennedy Creek area located just off Hwy 101 and the Mason County line. We have created a trail system that is managed and maintained for public use year-round and shared with the Squaxin Tribe. Such use includes non-motorized activities like horseback riding, hiking, walking, mountain biking, nature enthusiasts, and more. Hike, bike, walk, or ride to vistas with views of Mount Rainier, Summit Lake, or Totten Inlet or visit Kennedy Creek falls.
Our trail systems parallel the trails and area maintained by the South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group who manages a section of Kennedy Creek to enjoy and protect the chum salmon spawning run each year. We invite you to visit the Kennedy Creek area to enjoy its natural beauty.
